The Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS) is an Australian Government initiative funded by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. It is designed to lift school attendance levels in specific remote communities by employing local RSAS Teams to support parents, guardians, carers, community members and students to help get children to school every day and to work cooperatively with families, community members and schools to put in place strategies to support school attendance. This program operates in two communities, Kalkarindji/Daguragu and Yarralin/Lingarra. The program employs 11 Indigenous staff across the communities and a coordinator who oversees the program which includes the RSAS component of the School Attendance and Community Safety Program (SACS) operating in Kalkarindji/Daguragu.
This year the RSAS teams have undertaken continuous training through Webinars and Workshops presented by National Employment Services Association (NESA) and the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA). Staff are equipped with up-to-date information allowing them to hone their skills and knowledge and to perform their duties efficiently and safely.
Reward and Acknowledgement
There were two Attendance Reward camps held during 2016-17. Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) was the venue for a three day camp that included information sessions, night hikes and escarpment walks presented by a Parks and Wildlife Ranger, a yarning session around the camp fire and visits to the Katherine Pool and Museum.
The second reward was at the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Camp, Darwin. This exciting opportunity included educational sessions, skill development, health checks, games, swimming and tours to Parliament House, the beach, St Johns Boarding School and ten pin bowling. To qualify for these camps students had to maintain a minimum average of 80% attendance during the school term.
